The Treemeat you know is done. He’s ran off with a sexy little blogging system called Tumblr, and started calling himself blog.peterbaker.net...

Out with the old, in with the new I guess.

Hiatus Meaning Sabbatical

This is to the few of you still visiting this site.

You may have noticed things have taken a nosedive in the posting department here. My planned two month hiatus was supposed to be coming to an end with a new site and renewed vigor, but best laid plans, etc etc.

What with the general decline in photoblogging (thanks Flickr), it just hasn’t seemed worth putting new stuff up here. Combine that with a general decline in my dicking-around-online-time, and a lot of care and feeding for other people’s sites (read: work), and it all adds up to a lack of caring and feeding of any of my own.

Also, I’ve moved, from Berkeley to Ann Arbor, basically the same town, just different geography. So that’s not helped the previously mentioned dicking-around-online-time either.

One silver lining though; I have been shooting a lot. And I have been posting a bit, but on Flickr, so look there for new stuff.

I will be getting my act together soon, as I’m sure the Michigan winter will be helping me with that time-inside thing. Of course, snow is fun too, so we’ll see.

In case you haven’t heard, there’s a new cellphone out. I’ve got one. Everything you’ve heard about it is true; it’s pretty amazing. Going from my old busted Treo 600, this thing is a dream. The phone part itself is easily the best sounding cell phone I’ve ever had. Everything else works amazingly well, but I can’t wait until a few of the initial shortcomings are taken care of (no to-dos from iCal? wtf?).

One of my favorite things so far though is the screen, it’s gorgeous. I’ve already loaded it up with a ton of my own photos (straight from Aperture, so tight), and have wasted many hours just flicking back and forth between them, marveling at how nice and sharp and pretty they look. But, since most of what I shoot is square, using them as background wallpapers is less than ideal, as they don’t fill up the screen. So I cropped 36 photos to the native 320×480 pixel size, and loaded them back into Aperture and sync them to the iPhone for setting as a wallpaper in the Settings menu. If you’re interested, I’ve also got all of those wallpapers available to download here.

If you’re on the fence about the iPhone, maybe these wallpapers will convince you. :) Justin put some up too.

Maui waui

Back in the world and trying to get my head above water. Hawaii was dope. Spent a couple days on Oahu, a bunch more on Maui.

Took the new Mamiya for a serious spin (see photo above). The rangefinder form factor made it all the more easy for me to pull out and shoot with, often. I’ve got a lot of scanning to do, but so far it seems well worth it.

The crater on Maui is amazing. The waterfalls are fun. The waves were pretty great and the snorkeling is ridiculous. There’s some serious animosity between the native islanders and visitors though, not quite the Elvis-Presley-Don-Ho fantasy island we’re led to believe, unless you stick to the lame ass resort villages.

Oh, and I got engaged, to the best person in the world, just before we left (doing it in Hawaii would’ve been too cliché).

Treemeat v3 is up. After much debate over the style of the thing, and making a whole skin system to avoid having to choose, I decided to just go with the version I liked the most. The site is now built on CakePHP, something I’ve been meaning to do for a while now, and which will hopefully make updates and changes a lot smoother and plentiful. I do plan on having a skin system in place soon too, if only for myself, as I can never quite settle on anything I design for myself. Good news though, most of why photo posts have been lacking lately is because I’ve had this new format for multiple photos in one post in mind for so long that I’ve held off posting some photos until I had it up and running. Now it’s up and running, and I’ll be posting like a real life photoblogger again.

I’ll probably have more to say about it later, but right now, I need some sleep coffee.

Avoiding More Important Things

I have better more pressing things to do than “blog”, but I don’t want to do them, so I’m not.

I’m going to Hawaii next week, for the first time. Joshua is moving there soon, so I’m going to go check it out and make sure he’ll like it.

The Mamiya 6 is rocking my socks. It took me a while to get used to a rangefinder again (lots of blank frames from the lens cap being left on), but it’ll be worth it for those times I never would’ve bothered carrying a Hasselblad around. 6×6 forever!

Worst idea ever: “Celebrity Horoscope Blog.”

My armpits smell like olives right now (the GOOD smelling kind).

I just received my first new significant photo gear purchase in a long while; a Mamiya 6 with three lenses (50mm, 75mm, and 150mm). It’s a 6×6 rangefinder, almost like a mini-Hasselblad. Justin already predicts that it will take over as my main camera, and it’s easy to see why; it’s tiny (for medium format), shoots the same format, same size, and has almost exactly the same lens ranges that I already have for my Hasselblad (50mm, 80mm and 150mm). I’m heading out to take some test shots with it right now, and will hopefully have something to see tonight.
